The Department of Commerce at Guru Ghasidas Vishwavidyalaya was established in 1986, making it one of the oldest departments in the university. The Department since its inception has been imparting various courses like B.Com, M.Com with specializations in Finance, human resource and Marketing. The Department offered integrated UG/PG programme with Exit option from the academic year 2009 - 2010 and also offers PhD programme. The department has organised international conference and seminar to reflects a commitment to address social and contemporary issues and promoting awareness. The Department also aims at developing professionals in the fields of Academics, businesses as employees and entrepreneurs which is very much reflected in the course curriculum. The Department is also actively involved in the research and development activities to increase the academic interest among the students in the field of Commerce. The memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) and Tally education Pvt ltd. suggests collaboration between the department and a professional body. Such agreements often involve joint initiatives, academic exchanges, and opportunities for students to gain industry insights.

 Department of Commerce has always be a center of the University in catering the needs of large number ofstudents. It is the only department in the university having intake capacity of 240 students at UG level.  Department has generated number of PhD scholars and its own faculty members are now with Doctorate degree further bettering the chances of research and development through the Department.  Since 2015, a large number of students are qualifying NTA (erstwhile UGC) NET / JRF examinations.  Around 12 students have qualified for CGPSC Assistant Professor Examination and are working
